Amongst the largest producers of rice in the world, India also ranks itself in that list. Rice being the staple food in many regions of India, has the largest area under cultivation in India and is grown and consumed all over India. There is two type of rice one is basmati and one is non-basmati rice. Different parts of the country consume different types of rice. Some of the varieties of rice in India are:
1. Brown rice: Brown rice contains 7.9% protein compared to normal rice which has 7% of it. Brown rice has a good amount of Manganese, Phosphorous, Vitamin B6, and Selenium. It is good for consumption for someone willing to lose weight as it has high protein content and low fat.
2. White rice: White rice is the most commonly cultivated rice in India and major states for the cultivation of white rice are Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. White rice helps to relieve digestive disorders.
3. Parboiled rice: This rice is best for diabetic patients and has a good amount of Potassium, Iron, Calcium, and Manganese. This rice is partially boiled in a husk which also enhances its nutritional value, changes its texture, and is nutritionally similar to brown rice.
4. Basmati rice: Basmati is aromatic long grain rice which is rich in carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins. Basmati is loved for its aroma and is consumed all over India. Basmati rice is mainly used in rice dishes such as biryani.
5. Sticky rice: Sticky rice is popular in northeast India and is widely consumed there. It has a special property that enhances the immunity as it keeps the connective tissues strong and helps in the smooth functioning of the brain.
6. Black rice: Black rice is not widely used but is consumed in some parts of India. Black rice is rich in antioxidants and vitamins.
7. Red rice: Red rice gets cultivated in various region of India, but isn’t a widely consumed variety of rice. However, red rice is a good source of iron which helps in the proper functioning of the body. Certain studies also reveal that it is beneficial in encountering the risk of cancer.
8. Palakkadan Matta Rice: It is a popular variety of rice mainly famous in Kerala where it is widely cultivated and consumed. Palakkadan Matta Rice is red in colour and is rich in magnesium and calcium which are good for the overall functioning of the body.
9. Mapillai Samba Rice: This variety of rice is mainly grown in Tamil Nadu and contains high fibre. It additionally, provides immunity to the body due to its high fibre content. It is also used in some medicines for stomach and mouth ulcers. The consumption of this rice helps to improve digestion.
10. Bamboo rice: This wild rice is grown in dying bamboo shoots which is cultivated by the tribal community of Kerala. It has a considerable amount of minerals like carbohydrates, fibre, and protein. It helps in curing joint pain as it contains calcium as well as phosphorus.
